The DJI's Child and Youth Policy Unit is conceived as a research project which pursues a cross-sectional observation of the structures of child and youth policy in its interdependence and its (biographical) impact on children and adolescents, conducting empirical analysis and making the insights gained available to the protagonists of child and youth policy.

One particular focus of the work done by the Child and Youth Policy Unit is political consulting. Here it serves as a correspondence partner to the institutional protagonists of child and youth policy at the national level, in particular for the Federal Youth Board (BJK).
