For young people formal qualifications as certificates and diplomas still play a major role in the process of placement in the labour market. Disadvantaged young people who e.g. left school with low marks and without a school leaving certificate are at high risk not to find an apprenticeship training position. For those young people it is important and even necessary, to systematic ascertain their occupational competences which they have developed by informal learning. The presented article introduces the concept of competence, presents methods of measuring informally acquired competences and discusses the problem of transferring the results of such ascertainments into business reality.
