Social, economic and technological change in the past 50 years has led to profound changes of spatial organization of family life. There exists a high diversity of family arrangements. The phenomenon of multi-local family life points out close connections between numerous socio-spatial localization, dwelling, mobilities and family practices. The presented empirical findings show, how families are constituted by reference to or involvement in specific spatial processes (e.g. migration, spatial mobility), structures (e.g. nation states, regions, cities), or places (privacy). And vice versa, they point to how families and their members are “doing geography” (Werlen 1997) through their daily practices and, thus, how they shape spatial structures, residential space, residential environments, and infrastructures as well as how familal actors get involved with the diverse people and places where they live.
