- Fellow at the Hanse Institute of Advanced Study (Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg), Delmenhorst (2008): Research project: Bio-psycho-social mechanisms of aggression. Integration of sociological,psychological and neuro-scientific aspects of youth violence.
- Head of the Scientific Department of the German Youth Institute
- Current research: Longitudinal study of developmental paths of children (especially of emotions and aggression).
· Since the middle of the nineties: Empirical studies examining the development of social emotions, aggression, xenophobia and youth violence against migrants (in cooperation with scientists from the Max-Planck-Research Center for Human Ethology (Andechs), the universities of Munich and Jena).
· From the late eighties to the early nineties: Head of the Scientific Department of the German Youth Institute including the coordination of the institute's five-year plan of research, public relations, international relations, publications, and the library of the institute. In 1990 Klaus Wahl founded the scientific review "DISKURS - Studies on Childhood, Youth, Family, and Society". At present he is a member of the international board of editors of this review.
· From the seventies to the eighties: Secretary general of a commission of experts preparing the "Federal Government's Report on Families". Family research (from representative polls to qualitative studies on familiy problems like child abuse and marital violence), research on family and youth services, family policy.

Interessengebiete Fields of Interest
· Integration of sociological, psychological and biological perspectives to improve the understanding of the social behavior of children, adolescents and adults. Theoretical work on biopsychosociology, depth sociology, critique of sociological action theories, research on emotions, aggression, xenophobia, and social competences.
· Interdisciplinary empirical studies especially on emotions and violent behavior.
· Cooperation and co-teaching with natural scientists (nature and nurture; evolutionary psychology, human ethology, brain research etc.)
· Translating results from this interdisciplinary work for welfare services for children, youth and family, the educational system beginning with kindergarten, the political system and the media.
